Clerio F. Azevedo, MD, PhD

Dr. Clerio Azevedo obtained his medical degree at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, in 1998. He began his internal medicine residency program in 1999 and concluded his clinical cardiology fellowship training in 2002. Since then, he has focused his scientific interests on Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Coronary Computed Tomographic Angiography. In 2003 and 2004 he was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow under the supervision of Dr. João A. C. Lima at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. At this point his main research interests were on the characterization of acute myocardial infarction by cardiovascular MRI both in experimental and in clinical models. With his expertise in the delayed-enhancement technique and in the assessment of systolic and diastolic regional function using myocardial tagging techniques, he sought to develop new methods to improve the risk stratification of patients with acute myocardial infarction. Upon obtaining his PhD in 2009 at Heart Institute (InCor) of São Paulo University Medical School, Dr. Clerio Azevedo was appointed Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and Director of Cardiovascular MRI and CT at Clínica de Diagnóstico por Imagem - CDPI/DASA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At this point he shifted his interest to the study of non-ischemic cardiomyopathies by cardiac MRI, with a particular focus to valvular heart disease. In 2017 he moved to the United States and joined the Duke Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Center (DCMRC), where he worked for 6 years. In 2024, Dr Clerio Azevedo joined the advanced cardiovascular imaging group at Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
