Dr
University of Glasgow, United Kingdom
Consultant Radiologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with clinical and research interests in many aspects of MRI and CT, particularly cardiovascular imaging and stroke. Graduated in Medicine from Aberdeen University Medical School, Scotland. During subsequent radiology training I undertook a Visiting Fellowship in cardiovascular MRI at Harvard Medical School in Boston in 1994 prior to completing radiology training in Aberdeen. I commenced my consultant career in Glasgow in 1997 where I am now an Honorary Professor and Research Imaging Champion.
I have been involved in promoting the use of MRI and cardiac CT at all levels both in the UK and internationally. I have served as faculty member at the annual meetings of many imaging societies including the ISMRM, the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB), the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), the European Society of Cardiac Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and in the UK at many annual meetings of both the Royal College of Radiologists and the British Institute of Radiology.
I am honoured to be the current President of the Society of Magnetic Resonance Angiography (http://society4mra.org) working to promote MRA as a clinical tool helping patients.
I am also the immediate past-President of the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (www.bsci.org.uk) and currently the Royal College of Radiologists Visiting Professor for Cardiovascular Imaging.
I also have a strong interest in MRI contrast agents, being the Royal College of Radiologist’s spokesperson on contrast media and as a member of the ESUR Contrast Media Safety Committee I helped draft the most recent European guidelines (http://www.esur-cm.org/index.php/en/).
As a practising clinical radiologist using both CT and ultrasound in addition to MRI for my day-to-day work I believe I have unique insight as to which techniques add the most value for patient care and determine where research and advocacy initiatives will be most productive. Understanding where cardiovascular imaging adds value will help us to incorporate its use into evidence based guidelines which will allow their embedding into clinical practise.
