Dr. Robert Edelman is System Director, Advanced Imaging Research at Endeavor Health and Professor of Radiology at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. His current clinical focus is cardiovascular imaging. He is recognized for seminal MRI research contributions and is the recipient of multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health. His achievements include leading an internationally recognized interdisciplinary research group that pioneered MR angiography for imaging of the coronary arteries and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of myocardial perfusion, applied perfusion and diffusion MRI to the early diagnosis and characterization of stroke, and showed the feasibility of anatomic and functional MRI of the lungs. His research group developed many techniques for MR imaging and angiography that are now in widespread clinical use. Dr. Edelman is past-president and recipient of the Gold Medal of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and is also a recent recipient of the Gold Medal of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. He has authored more than 350 articles and published the 3rd edition of his well-known textbook, Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging, in 2006. He has been repeatedly selected for Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors in Chicago, and Marquis Who's Who in America.
His current research focuses on two primary areas: (1) the exploration of a novel class of steady-state MRI techniques, called T1 Relaxation-Enhanced Steady-State (T1RESS); and (2) the development and clinical validation through multi-center trials, of advanced imaging strategies that will improve the efficiency, diagnostic accuracy, and ease of use of cardiovascular MR, while broadening the spectrum of clinical applications. His research group recently demonstrated that T1RESS greatly improves the visibility of brain tumors in contrast-enhanced MRI compared with legacy neuroimaging techniques. Most recently, highly accelerated T1RESS techniques have opened up the door to new clinical applications for cardiovascular MRI.
