Bicentennial Turing Chair in Computational Medicine
University of Manchester
University of Manchester, United Kingdom
Alejandro (Alex) obtained his undergraduate degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (Barcelona) in 1996. He pursued a PhD in Medicine at the Image Sciences Institute of the University Medical Centre Utrecht on model-based cardiovascular image analysis. Prof Frangi holds the Bicentennial Turing Chair in Computational Medicine at the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK, with joint appointments at the Department of Computer Science (School of Engineering) and the Division of Informatics, Imaging and Data Science (School of Health Sciences). He is also the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies, with a focus on precision computational medicine for medical devices in silico trials. His contributions to the field have been recognised with a Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2023) and the IEEE EMBS Technical Achievement Award (2021) by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.
Professor Frangi's primary research interests lie at the crossroads of medical image analysis and modelling, emphasising machine learning (phenomenological models) and computational physiology (mechanistic models). He is particularly interested in statistical methods applied to population imaging and in silico clinical trials. He is also interested in physics-informed deep learning and, more generally, integrating prior knowledge with otherwise data-driven approaches. His highly interdisciplinary work has garnered international recognition, and he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council. He also leads the InSilicoUK Pro-Innovation Regulations Network (www.insilicouk.org).
