Gerry McCann is a NIHR Research Professor/Professor of Cardiac Imaging and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the University of Leicester and is the Cardiovascular theme lead for the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre and a theme lead for the newly awarded BHF Centre of Research Excellence. Gerry is a former middle distance athlete, undertook one of the first ever BSc in physiology and sports science and prior to specialising in caridac imaging was a lecturer in exercise and cardiovascular disease at the University of Glasgow. He was a also full-time NHS consultant cardiologist before undertaking successive NIHR research fellowships since 2011. He now directs a very active clinical imaging research programme with funding from the British Heart Foundation, MRC and his NIHR Research Professorship is focused on the prevalence of heart failure in a multi-ethnic population withT2D and how best to diagnose and prevents symptom onset, working closely with researchers from the Leicester Diabetes Centre. He has numerous national and international collaborations working on coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, heart failure and interest in atrial fibrillation in veteran athletes. He has an excellent track record in building research capacity and has undertaken extensive leadership and mentoring training.
