Dr. Atalar is an Electrical and Electronics Engineering Professor at Bilkent University, Turkiye. He is currently on sabbatical at NHLBI-NIH, Bethesda MD. He spent almost half of his academic career at Johns Hopkins University. While he was at Hopkins, he became known for his contributions to cardiovascular MRI and interventional MRI. His inventions resulted in the formation of ClearPoint Neuro, Inc. (formerly Surgi-Vision Inc.). He left Hopkins as a Professor of Radiology with adjunct appointments at the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
After returning to Turkiye in 2005, he focused to magnetic resonance engineering and the safety of MRI. He received govermental funds to form UMRAM, the national magnetic resonance research center.
He authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal papers. His h-index is 71, according to Google Scholar, with more than 17000 citations (h-index=47 and 6800+ citations according to Scopus) as of January 2025. He holds 54 US patents. Dr. Atalar is a fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the National Academy of Inventors, USA. He received the Science Award from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye. Dr. Atalar is a member of the Academia Europaea and Science Academy, Turkiye.
