Dr. Axel received a PhD in astrophysics from Princeton University in 1971, and then switched into medicine, receiving an MD from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 1976 and continuing at UCSF for residency and fellowship training in radiology. He joined the faculty at University of Pennsylvania in 1981, and moved to NYU School of Medicine in 2001. He is currently a Professor of Radiology, Medicine, and Neuroscience and Physiology at NYU. Dr. Axel has spent most of his career working at the interface of clinical and technical research, using imaging methods, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to study heart disease. A major theme of this research has been the development and use of novel MRI methods for the evaluation of cardiac function.
