Twenty-five males and females (five for each decade), mean age 43±13.8 years, were included. The mean time for the manual analysis was 45' (range 40-50). Long axis (LAX) peak longitudinal strain averaged at 23.9±3.0%, the LAX peak radial strain averaged at 57±12.6% (Figure 2) and the LA EF averaged at 64.48±6.2%. A weak negative correlation was found between peak LAX radial strain and age (rs=-0.31, p=0.02) (Figure 3). No correlations were found between LA EF and the age nor the sex of the volunteers. Likewise, no correlation was found between LAX longitudinal strain and the considered variables.
Conclusion: Cine SSFP sequences and feature tracking allow for LA strain analysis and a precise quantification of LA EF. The procedure is time consuming only for the analysis, being not available a dedicated automatic contouring tool for atrial strain. The correlation between LAX radial strain and age could represent a physiological decrease in atrial function with age. The obtained results could serve as normal values in diagnosing early myocardial disfunction with preserved EF and are provided for clinical and research purposes.
